Polkemmet closes the gates for the final time and the old colliery buildings are soon demolished. Colliery spoil heaps are left behind littering the landscape for years to come. Likened to a lunar landscape, it was easy to see why – as far as the eye could see the land looked lifeless. Dominating the skyline was Burning Bing 3, this huge conical mountain could be seen for miles around providing a continual reminder of the history of the area.
